what amounts to Genocide?

The other day, someone e-mailed me a petition, to request the Vatican for an appology for the use of poisonous gas by Fascist Italy on Ethiopians during the period 1935-1941. My understanding is that an action amounts to Genocide if atrocities are done to members of a group just because they are members of that group.
